Are waves in the middle of the ocean calm or ferocious?

I've always wondered. Say someone was stranded in the middle of the ocean on like a tube. Would the waves be far too harsh to survive, or would they be calm enough that the person can just stare at the stars and die of starvation... or get saved heroically.
