Young Adult Vampire book published in the 1990's?

I'm looking for a book I read back in the 90's about vampires. It takes place in a beach town and I can only remember some of the first chapter and few more details past that. The book opens with a guy and girl on a date during the summer. You know he is a vampire (I think it's written from his perspective) and near the end of the date he kisses her and then leans down and bites her neck and she pushes him off her and says something like "You idiot, I'm a vampire too!" That is how the first chapter ends. It goes thru and talks about a best friend he used to have that he accidentally killed and now he see's every now and then. Sorry there isn't a lot of detail but I am dying to find this book again. Please help!
